Zone Commercial, Kigali, Rwanda

Since 2008 Peter Rich has been acting as a ‘technical coordinator’ in an advisory capacity to the City of Kigali, Rwanda on urban development strategy, with input on all major urban development initiatives in the city.

Working closely with the Mayors Urban Planning and Renewal Unit, Peter has made both strategic and detailed contributions to many projects ensuring that the rapid development that the city faces to accommodate the major anticipated growth is sympathetic to the existing fabric and local traditions.

The zone commercial is located in the centre of Kigali, adjacent to the proposed new taxi rank and market development. It is a long street of commercial properties with apartments above and under utilized industrial development in yards behind, which step down the steeply sloping topography.

The site was measured and drawn in detail for the purposes of forming the brief for a 15 day student project and workshop at the University IUAV of Venice’s summer programme where radical new ideas for the site could be explored and discussed.
